“Our unconscious mind exerts a profound influence: shaping decisions, molding behavior, and running our lives.”
This beginning quote sets a fascinating premise for an intriguing look at human behavior. The author uses a blend of his personal experiences as both a psychologist and a WWII veteran and experiences of those he has encountered to further enrich the story. These stories range from cheerful to sad to hauntingly disturbing, and each one is rich with the emotions of both the author and the people in them. While the personal side to the book was poignant, beautiful, and extremely well crafted, there was an absence of scientific explanations. Although the author attempts to quantify the subconscious mind, he does not go into much detail and mentions it only sporadically. While each chapter was excellent on its own, they had little to do with each other. There does not appear to be a unifying element. For instance, there were several chapters devoted to a unique parenting approach involving the use of “metaphors,” which in itself was fascinating and the author did an excellent job of outlining the method and giving examples of how it can be applied. However, this did not seem to fit the other chapters in the story, which involved pedophilia, utopia, nuclear war, and one chapter devoted to a dream the author had about the nature of reality. While each of these chapters was an interesting read on its own, they had little in common and I found the topics sporadic and inconclusive. While this book may not be for someone who is looking for logical, science-based explanations of human behavior, it is excellent if you are looking for emotionally honest vignettes that will make you reflect on the human experience.
